Welcome

Sustainable Wantage is a Community Action Group, part of a network of over 80 similar CAGs across Oxfordshire, focused on activities that protect and enhance our natural environment and strengthen our local community. We are run by volunteers interested in actions that have a positive impact and increase our resourcefulness and resilience as a community.

The Wantage Mix

The Mix Community Space on Mill Street is our home in Wantage town centre. We are open for refills of toiletries & detergents and recycling with the Terracycle scheme and the Community Fridge.

Wild Wantage is a project in partnership with Wantage Town Council, with the aims of transforming our green spaces, promoting biodiversity of local species and encouraging everyone in the community to get involved. Visit our Wild Wantage section for loads of great resources and ways you can help.

Over in Charlton, The Wantage Market Garden Project is a fantastic community garden we support as a partnership project. We have small groups of volunteers on Sundays. Visit our Facebook page for the latest news.

Pewit Plantation

Pewit Plantation is a small woodland near the Ridgeway that we are managing via a lease with the Woodland Trust. It is open to the public, with Scouts and Forest Schools being among the visitors to enjoy the space and wonderful view.

Top Lock Meadow

Wildflowers are the focus at the Top Lock Meadow on Mably Way, an ongoing project to create a haven for wildlife. This is one of the Sustainable Wantage Growing Projects supported by volunteers and aimed at enhancing local biodiversity.

We’re proud to launch a new map to provide information on where items can be repaired, or passed on to be reused or recycled – thanks to a grant from the Wantage Town Council.

Use the online map here: Re-use and Repair Map

Using the map will help people to cut down waste, save money and also support local businesses and charities. It covers items ranging from duvets, shoes and washing machines to pre-loved jewellery, wedding dresses and furniture. Jo Harvey from The Mix says: “Everyone is aware that we need to conserve the Earth’s fragile resources and to cut down on waste and carbon emissions. One of the best ways we can do this is by keeping things in the system – buying second-hand, fixing things where we can and disposing of unwanted possessions in a way that extends their life by being upcycled, repaired and reused.”

Paper copies of the map can be collected from The Mix, 15 Mill Street, Wantage and stickers will also be displayed in the windows of participating local shops and businesses.
